I dreaded the foam topper and did everything I could to avoid it. Unfortunately, my wife's hip pain was getting worse and we didn't have a choice. We gave this gel foam a try as an alternative and to my surprise, I actually liked it (even though I like hard beds). In fact, I don't think I've ever slept better and my wife's hip pain is completely gone. She absolutely loves it which is a good thing. When you consider the cost of a new mattress, you can't go wrong with this topper.Regarding smell, it took about two weeks for the smell to completely dissipate. However, the smell never really bothered either one of us during that two week period (small price to pay for the comfort).As for the heat retention that a few others have mentioned, I'm about 6' 220lbs and don't like being hot when I sleep. After having the topper for about 6 weeks, I have not noticed any issues regarding heat retention.Another reviewer on another site mentioned that the gel foam lost its spongie properties in a short amount of time where they mostly laid. After 6 weeks of use, we have not noticed any such issue.Like others, we bought ours at Costco at a considerably cheaper price than here on Amazon. I still buy many things on Amazon and appreciate their no-censor policy regarding where to find the cheaper price. Seller integrity = Buyer loyalty.

I read many different reviews and searched website after website, until I finally decided on the Sleep Innovations gel-memory foam mattress topper. The mixture of gel and memory foam make this mattress topper unbelievably comfortable. I was a little leery at first because I am a pretty large man and it is only 2 1/2 inches thick, but after laying down in it I soon realized my worries dissipated quickly. My wife absolutely loves this mattress topper because it has completely transformed our old mattress and we both have shoulder, back and neck pains. So far it has taken such a great deal of pressure off of our joints, that I'm thinking about buying one for my father as well. I definitely recommend this mattress topper. I think it's the best mattress topper on the market, but make sure you do your research as well.

Serta 2.5 Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper is a unique mattress covering. It combines memory foam with gel beads for added comfort- a combination that takes the concept of a mattress topper to a new level, providing softness, heat dispersion, and form fitting comfort all with the goal of improving sleep.Removing this Serta product from its package and setting up are easy. All you do is cut the plastic wrap and unroll it over your mattress. There is an odd chemical smell at first, but don't let this bother you too much. In a matter of days the smell will be gone. Once the padding has been anchored in place, on each corner of your mattress, it will be ready for use.Looking at the different qualities of this mattress, straight from the bag and onto the bed, reveals many positive characteristics and first among them is the cotton covering. It is soft, removable, and machine washable. It also has longer sides that help to hold the pad in place. This is better than the experience I have had with other foam toppers- many of which tend to slide around and have to be re- centered on the bed.Now, for the part that matters most: the sleeping experience. This Serta product does provide a good degree of softness and cushioning and it makes a good choice for those with specific joint or back problems that are irritated by sleeping on a firm mattress. However, for those who suffer back pain from sleeping on a too soft mattress, this topper could aggravate your condition. I tend to prefer a firm mattress and thus I have not found this topper to help me with my sleep. My wife, on the other hand, likes this topper very much and that is because she likes the softness and cushioning.Another unusual quality of this topper is that it tends to reduce tossing and turning. The reason is because it takes more effort to move around. You body tends to conform itself into a pocket- like space and once in place, it takes more of an effort to re- position the body. Much like the softness factor described above, this could be good for some and bad for others. Those who tend to toss and turn all night and wake up their spouse in the process will like this feature, but others might find it too restricting. I have found that, rather then freely rolling from my side to my back, like I did on my regular mattress, I now have to use a little more muscle power to make the transition.So, what is my bottom line on this Serta mattress topper? Well, for all of the reasons states above, I can see how some will love it and others will curse its name. I don't necessarily sleep any better than before but I like the way the gel beads help to disperse heat and my wife says it does help her sleep better. It adds up to an average product overall that will likely invoke strong reactions from all who use it.
